‘Europe’s new meat tycoons’ reveals the corporate ownership and concentration of the European meat sector. This was a pan-European project that involved investigative work across Italy, Spain and the UK. We were commissioned to produce a market analysis of the UK meat sector, developing an original methodology to estimate its size from the ground up. Our methodology was adopted by partners in Spain and Italy, who used it to size the meat sector in their countries. In a comparative analysis of market concentration across Europe, our research revealed that the meat sector in the UK is even more concentrated than in Italy and Spain, with just eight companies dominating.
