Description:
Muck Maps reveals the areas of the UK that are most at risk from factory farm nutrient pollution by estimating the spread of the manure produced on intensive pig and poultry farms. To illustrate the extent of factory farm pollution, we created a multi-layered map, visualised manure spread and organised our findings by council, constituency, and river catchment. To produce Muck Maps, we solved the complex problem of mapping diffuse pollution and developed an innovative waste accounting method, which showed UK factory farm chickens and pigs create up to 33,450 tonnes of manure every day. Muck Maps was Compassion In World Farming’s highest ever viewed web page.
Design:
An interactive mapping tool that tracks the likelihood of manure spread and related nutrient pollution, referencing colours from popular city navigation apps.
