Nitazenes Investigation

Illustrations, design and data visualisation for an investigative series by Tower Hamlets Slice into the emergence and impact of a new synthetic opiod in East London: nitazenes.

“ Deadlier than heroin or fentanyl, nitazenes have arrived in Tower Hamlets. A new investigative series by the Slice asks, are we prepared?”

Illustrations for an ongoing series by Tower Hamlets Slice. Nitazenes are a cheap and potent ingredient, driving a new public health emergency. Nitazenes have been foind in an increasing range of drugs - not just opiod painkillers or heroin, but ecstasy, ketamine, and more.

Nitazenes are so strong that the lethal overdose amount is only visible under microscope. Deaths are rising across the country, likely underreported due to inadequate testing and policy.

The images for this series are collages based on objects, photographs, data and places featured in the investigations. Colours have been derived from nitazene powders and the Slice’s style guide.
